Good Day Amvets, Aux., SOA, & Riders
This has been a very busy Second year of my elected duties as Dept Commander. Before our SEC Committee assignments in July at the Durand Post 2273, my Union Carpenter neighbor helped construct walls in the Lodge between the kitchen and Dept office. We lost power at the Lodge during this construction, but the walls were roughed in and additional walls were re-drywalled. Finish sanding was completed within the three additional separate visits to the Lodge.
Mid-August was our 75th National Amvets Convention in Louisville, KY where President Trump spoke to us and signed wavers for 100% Disabled Veteran’s schooling costs, which were to be forgiven. Our small contingency of Michigan attendees (8) voting members attended seminars and classes pertaining to Amvets procedures and By-laws. Our 2020 National Convention in Springfield, IL is closer to us and I expect a much larger attendance of our state’s membership.
District 1 Commander Blank, attended a week long training session in Lansing on Service Officer Training. Also, the Lodge hosted the American Legion training session prior to our Fall Conference in Grand Rapids.
The Fall Conference held several training sessions after the initial SEC meeting. Sorry to say, our Veterans attendance was poorly supported. This is where the Post membership should be in attendance to learn more of the proper procedures and by-laws of the Amvets.
I want to thank the Amvets Riders for coming up to the lodge for their annual Lodge cleanup while I painted the new office walls inside the Lodge.
Met with our new District 7 Commander Bernie Stanaway and held the first District 7 Conference Call with (4) of the (6) Posts in attendance, which are spread across the entire Upper. The Post response was very positive and they are committed to a minimum (3) District Conference Call Meetings per year.
We are still in need of a Dept Quarterly News Letter Editor to compile Dept, District & Post info and send it out quarterly by e-mail and into our website.
The Amvets Lodge lawsuit is still pending from the two Higgins Lake Homeowners Association, but it is being overseen by our Attorney hired by our Insurance Company. I will be creating a Face Book page as to this issue prior to the Holidays after it is reviewed by our Attorney. Also look for it on my next quarter’s Commanders Corner page, on this site.
Again I would like to thank all of the SEC members and especially Lenny Hogan for their support and commitment to this Dept.
Your Dept Commander
